The minimum vocabulary is one of the greatest challenges for an English Language Teacher responsible for imparting training to the students to improve their Spoken English acumen. The first-timers do not have the basic level of vocabulary to be able to understand or express the language. It becomes even more difficult for the teacher if the students are in a mixed group where some have a certain vocabulary level, whereas others have the least knowledge of the words. A decent vocabulary of regularly and most commonly used words are essential for understanding and expressing. The first challenge in a mixed group is bringing them to an equal vocabulary level. It is observed that an English Language Lab can help enhance the students' vocabulary, provided they are using the right language lab software.
The English language teacher has to adapt to several methods for enhancing the students' vocabulary to a minimum level before actually starting to train them to be able to express themselves in the language. The process could involve letting the students learn the meaning of the words likely to be used in a lesson before actually starting the lesson. The other could be giving a list of the most commonly used words with examples of sentences and phrases to enable them to understand the best use of the words. This process could help in a permanent vocabulary.
These methods are used by teachers worldwide and can effectively improve vocabulary. But, this does not help improve the students' spoken ability. A better way could involve the students in participative conversations is through language lab activities. It has been observed that an audio-video combination has a lasting effect. Making the words visible in the form of images and frequent repetition of the words certainly has a lasting effect, and the words are better retained. Encouraging the students to start a conversation using these words, even if it may require prompting, always helps remove their hesitation. This helps in getting familiar with the words and helps in understanding the use of the word in different situations. Giving instructions to use English for all conversations with their peers can be a great idea. A blend of all these will most likely increase and imbibe a permanent vocabulary bank. We can successfully use these methods in a class of a mixed group of students to improve their understanding of the language.
One can implement one or all of the above processes in the class to improve the vocabulary and, thus, the Spoken English abilities of the entire group. You must give all instructions primarily in English, and the students are made to understand the instruction. It would help if you gave adequate directions, and students should be made to ask and answer questions in English. It does not matter if they have to be fed with words for doing so. This will be a great method to enhance their confidence in speaking and add to their vocabulary and right use of the words. Creating imaginary situations and initiating dialogues where students must participate should be a regular part of the training process.
All said and done, individuals or groups will best learn the language with the approach discussed above. The individual training can be done through individual Apps or Language labs with access to individual systems, with the set of students who can then be involved in group activities. The Talk Right Language lab has been created to meet the requirements of the students. It is the best option for a language lab software for schools to set up.
One thing that is of utmost importance is the patience of both the trainee and the trainer. Errors are bound to happen in mastering the Spoken language.
I recommend you download Talk Right, the android learning app for individual learning, or schools can opt for Talk Right, the Language lab for their students.
